Cassiopea
Cassiopea (coordinate: 1h ; 60°) è una costellazione circumpolare che raggiunge la massima altezza sull’orizzonte a mezzanotte, circa all’inizio di ottobre. È facilmente riconoscibile per la sua forma a M (se osservata in autunno) o a W (se osservata in primavera). Cassiopea è una delle 48 costellazioni descritte da Tolomeo già intorno al 150 d.C.

La costellazione Cassiopea rappresenta l’omonima leggendaria regina etiope, intenta a guardarsi allo specchio: secondo il mito, Cassiopea si credeva la donna più bella del mondo, persino più bella delle Nereidi, le ninfe del mare. Poseidone, per punire la vanità della regina, liberò nel mare che bagna le coste dell’Etiopia il terribile mostro Ceto, la Balena. Cassiopea e il marito Cefeo decisero di sacrificare al mostro la figlia Andromeda, per acquietare l’ira degli dei. La fanciulla, incatenata ad una scogliera, venne salvata dall’eroe Perseo. Cassiopea invece, come ulteriore punizione, fu costretta a girare per l’eternità intorno al Polo Nord.
